What are your thoughts after listening to the story? Whilst the book is aimed at younger children there are important messages that everybody (including adults) should listen to. The story tells us that it's important to look after our bodies and our planet because we only get one. It talks about the importance of making the most of our time on Earth and that it is our duty to look after and respect our planet for the sake of future generations.
Activity - A Guide to Being a Good Citizen on Planet Earth ( Please watch my video explaining the task)
Today you are going to be doing a piece of writing based around the messages in the story. I want you to imagine that an alien has landed on Planet Earth and they've been fortunate enough to crash land in the middle of the St Catherine's playground and meet you. You are going to produce a guide for them that explains how they can be a good citizen on Earth and how they can make our planet a better place to live.
You will need to think about some of the issues that our planet and humans currently face - there are lots! Some examples include: global warming, ocean plastic, destruction of habitats, racism, animal cruelty, war and poor health. You may be able to think of others.
In your guide I want you to choose three different problems that Earth currently faces. You will need to explain what these problems are to your new alien friend. After you have explained the problems, you are then going to tell your friend what they can do in order to be a good citizen and make our planet a better place.
As this is your main piece of work for today, I want you to spend some time on your writing. You are going to be writing about three issues that Earth faces so that means at least three different paragraphs - you may also wish to write a brief introduction. In your writing I expect to see;
Complex sentences (think about your work from yesterday)
Lots of descriptive language - remember that this alien knows nothing about our planet
A range of punctuation - Capital letters, full stops and commas are an absolute must!
Have a read of my example introduction and paragraph one so that you can get an idea of what I am looking for. If you have any questions then please ask.
