Investigating properties of circles

Today the children have investigated the properties of circles. We learned that the diameter is double the length of the radius. We then investigated the relationship between diameter and circumference by drawing our own circles with compasses and measuring the circumference with string and rulers. As a class, we discovered that the circumference is approximately 3 x bigger than the diameter which led us to learning about a very special number, pi (3.14). We found a website showing the first 1,000,000 digits of pi and discovered that pi is an irrational number which goes on forever! We learned so much today and had great fun along the way!
