MFL

MFL – Spanish

Intent

As a school, we aim to deliver an MFL curriculum which encourages children to develop an interest in learning other languages through enjoyable and stimulating lessons. We strive to inspire a curiosity and confidence to explore other countries and languages thus enabling children to welcome and celebrate cultural differences. This will allow them to develop a deepened ability to show respect, communicate effectively with others and become valuable citizens in our global society. We aim to embed the knowledge and skills necessary to enable children to use and apply their Spanish learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning in Key Stage 3.

Implementation

Spanish is taught in termly blocks in KS2.

Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop language skills which build on prior knowledge throughout Key Stage 2 to embed and deepen children’s learning. Key vocabulary is frequently revisited and a variety of teaching methods are used to ensure children foster a positive attitude towards learning Spanish. These include games, interactive activities, a use of a range of media and songs.

Our curriculum planning ensures our children can use all four skill areas to the best of their ability and to develop confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish.

Impact

Our MFL Curriculum is high quality and demonstrates progression, therefore when our children leave St. Catherine’s, they will:

  • Become aware that a language has a structure, and that the structure differs from one language to another.
  • Develop their language and communication through development of the four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • Enrich their language learning by developing an understanding of the Spanish culture.
  • Transfer to KS3 effectively and successfully and will be well prepared to continue and develop their language skills.
