Physical Education

Intent

PE at Saint Catherine's means providing a safe and supportive environment for children to participate and compete in a range of sports and activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. We aim to foster a love of sport and physical activity in all of our children and hope to inspire them to become lifelong active people who understand the benefits that physical activity can have for their all round well-being. Our intention is to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities through which our children are able develop, build on and improve the fundamental skills needed to access a wide range of physical and sporting activities. At Saint Catherine's, we believe that children should understand the importance of healthy competition and that they should always strive to do their very best: we aim to provide them with regular opportunities to compete both as an individual and as part of a team. Through PE, we want to teach our children important life skills such as teamwork, leadership and learning how to swim. We hope that when our children leave Key Stage 2, they are equipped with the skills, understanding and mindset to lead healthy and active lifestyles.

Implementation

  • Children in EYFS, KS1 and KS2 will access 2 hours per week of high quality PE in their weekly timetable.
  • PE at Saint Catherine's provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure.
  • The curriculum map sets out which PE units are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the national curriculum are met fully.
  • Using the GetSet4PE scheme, each class will cover two different physical disciplines per half term. This scheme ensures that lessons are progressive and children are able to further develop their skills as they progress through school.
  • The emphasis of our PE curriculum is inclusion for all children regardless of sporting ability. We provide suitable learning opportunities for all children, including those with SEND. We want all of our children to have a love for PE and to be given the chance to achieve.

  • Each week, children will have one PE lesson delivered by their class teacher and one lesson from PE experts at either Wigan Athletic or Premier Sports.
  • In addition to their timetabled PE sessions, children are encouraged to participate in a variety of lunch time and after school extra curricular activities. These activities have ranged from football, rugby and dodgeball, to judo, archery and fencing. We aim to expose our children to a wide variety of sports.
  • In Year 5, our children will receive weekly swimming lessons at Leigh Sports Village throughout the year. This will be one of their weekly timetabled PE sessions. Any children unable to swim 25m by the end of Year 5 are then invited back in Year 6.
  • In EYFS and KS1, our children will be taught the fundamental skills and understanding important for sporting and physical activity. In KS2, they will apply their learning to a wide variety of sporting disciplines.
  • Our children are invited to attend a wide variety of sporting competitions in the local area run by either Premier Sports or School Games. These events are run with inclusion in mind, giving as many children as possible the opportunity to compete and develop their teamwork skills.

  • We promote both participation and competition through P.E and sport. We ensure all children experience competition at some level, individually or in a team, within lessons.

  • Children in Year 5 and 6 are given the opportunity to represent the school football team in the local schools league with training sessions open to all and taking place two lunchtimes a week.

Impact

Our children have the opportunity to achieve their full potential in PE and reach age related expectations. PE lessons will have 100% participation and our children will be fully engaged with the learning across a wide variety of sporting activities. Children will be working at age related expectations in PE. Our children will show enthusiasm and a love for sport both in and out of school and will leave Saint Catherine's knowing how to take responsibility for their own health and fitness. Children understand how to compete sensibly and are able to do this successfully both individually and as part of a team.
